V-belt drives fail quickly when belt section and pulley groove profile do not match. Wedge profiles (metric SP series) and classical profiles (A, B, C, D) use different groove angles, top widths, and depth dimensions. Mixing profiles causes belt riding high in the groove, slip, heat, and groove wear within weeks. This guide helps maintenance teams identify profile from belt marking, groove measurement, or equipment documentation before ordering replacements.
Wedge (narrow) profiles — SP series
European metric wedge belts replaced many classical sections in modern industrial equipment. They offer higher power capacity in a narrower envelope. Pulleys must match exactly — SPA belt on SPB pulley is not acceptable.
| Profile | Wedge width (approx.) | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| SPZ | 10 mm | Small compressors, light fans |
| SPA | 13 mm | HVAC, pumps, general industrial |
| SPB | 17 mm | Compressors, conveyors, heavier drives |
| SPC | 22 mm | Large fans, heavy process equipment |
Classical profiles (A, B, C, D)
Classical belts remain common on older US-imported equipment and some legacy OEM drives. Markings such as 'B85' indicate classical B-section with length in inches.
Classical and wedge profiles are not interchangeable even if outer dimensions look similar — groove angle and pitch width differ.
| Profile | Top width (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 13 mm (0.5 in) | Light drives |
| B | 17 mm (0.66 in) | Very common on legacy equipment |
| C | 22 mm (0.88 in) | Heavy industrial |
| D | 32 mm (1.25 in) | Large power transmission |
How to identify profile on site
- Read belt marking — most reliable (e.g. SPB 2800, 3V, B85)
- Compare old belt cross-section template against new sample
- Measure groove top width and depth with profile gauge
- Check equipment manual or motor/compressor nameplate
- Photograph belt and pulley grooves for supplier verification
Multi-groove drives
All grooves in a drive must use the same profile and matched belt set length. Mixing old and new belts of different lengths in one drive causes uneven load sharing.
When replacing pulleys on multi-groove drives, confirm groove count and whether pulley is solid or split for installation over fixed shaft shoulders.
Timing and poly-V (brief cross-reference)
HTD/GT timing belts use toothed pulleys — not V-grooves. Poly-V (ribbed) belts use multi-rib pulleys with J/K/L/M profiles. If the belt has teeth or ribs rather than a single wedge, refer to timing or poly-V specifications separately.
Common mistakes
- Assuming SPB and classical B are the same because width looks close
- Replacing single belt on multi-belt drive without matched set
- Installing classical belt in wedge pulley after 'close enough' guess
- Ignoring groove wear — worn pulleys destroy new belts quickly
